"Everyone a quiz master" Competition

Every Sunday our children at the Hope House have a competition or two to enhance their intellectual abilities. This Sunday's competition is called "Everyone a quiz master" and in this competition as the name implies everyone gets to be the quiz master and also to be the participant to answer the questions.  This is how it works.

We gave them the reading assignment (a week before) and that is to read the book of Esther from the Bible.  Those of you who are not familiar with this story, Esther is an orphan child from a modest background, brought up by her uncle ends up as a queen in the Kings Palace.  When the situation warranted, she stood by her people in front of the King to protect them.

They were asked to read the entire book (probably they would have finished reading it in an hour) and compile as many questions as they possibly could.  All the participants gets a chance to be a quiz master to ask 10 questions each (order of participants was prepared with draw of lots) and the repeat questions are not allowed.  When the quiz master asks a question, whoever answer that question correctly gets a candy and if not the quiz master gets a candy.  Idea is to make them to prepare hardest possible questions for which they have to read the chapters carefully

Totally 12 participants participated and the number of questions prepared by each one ranged between 10 and 34.  There was enormous interest during the entire competition as their peers were asking the questions and instant gratification being there also helped.  Sujatha won the competition as she had prepared the highest number of questions (34) and five hardest questions out of the ten.

At the end of the competition, we all of us sat together and discussed about the lessons learnt from this book.  We unanimously agreed that our positions and possessions in life should not make us proud but humble enough not to forget our roots.

Lessons Learnt:
  • To learn something, don't just read to answer questions but prepare questions which is doubly hard.
  • Don't make anything mandatory and have instant gratification.
  • Make children become the teachers (quiz masters in this case) which makes the other children to relate to the teacher easily (including corrections).

Fundamental Principle of JJ Act: "Principle of Positive Measures"

There are 16 fundamental principles in the Juvenile & Justice Act (JJ Act).   Principle of Positive measures : All resources are to be mobilized including those of family and community, for promoting the well-being, facilitating development of identity and providing an inclusive and enabling environment, to reduce vulnerabilities of children and the need for intervention under this Act.

What’s the difference between a ‘welfare based’ approach vs ‘rights based’ approach of child care?

Over the last 20 years, child care approach has evolved tremendously in India towards ‘rights based’ approach, thanks to the enactment of Juvenile and Justice Act (JJ Act).   If you’re running a child care institution and not following a rights based approach, you may be violating some of the fundamental rights and/ or fundamental principles of JJ act.

Now, you too can restore missing/ lost/ trafficked children in India

After our recent work to restore three missing boys to their homes, it got me thinking about how to do this work faster and to include more people. I explored of doing it in various ways but they all require lot of money and human resources. So I thought of an easy way to do this work and that is by using social microblogging site www.twitter.com. I set up an account at http://www.twitter.com/indiachildalert and this is how it is going to work. If you’re in India, send an SMS (Short Messaging Service) from your mobile phone as FOLLOW INDIACHILDALERT to 53000 and that’s it (Yes!! Can you believe it? You don’t even have to have a personal twitter account). Then on, anytime we have a missing/ lost/ trafficked child with us, we’ll post it on the above mentioned twitter account and you’ll receive the same information as SMS in your mobile. Don’t worry about receiving long SMS’s from us because twitter only allows the sender to send a message in 140 characters. If at any time, you c
